Kohima: Multiple civil society organizations in Nagaland have issued strong condemnations regarding recent reports of sexual violence in Kiphire and Kohima. The Zeliang Youth Organisation Chumukedima, Zeliang Youth Organization Dimapur, Zeliang Students' Union Nagaland, and the Sumi Totimi Hoho are among the groups demanding immediate action and accountability from authorities.
Public outrage centers on an alleged rape of an 82-year-old woman in Kiphire, which reportedly involves Heluikie Nsanglung Amos, a member of the Nagaland Police. Describing the event as a heinous act perpetrated against a vulnerable and aged woman, the Zeliang Youth Organisation Chumukedima demanded that there be no clemency for such a depraved act. The organization has called for an expedited investigation and the imposition of strict legal penalties.
The Zeliang Youth Organization Dimapur echoed these sentiments, labeling the incident an assault upon humanity. They urged the government to apply the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, specifically sections 63 and 64, while demanding the immediate suspension of the accused. They also emphasized that the survivor must receive comprehensive medical, psychological, and legal support throughout the legal process.
The Sumi Totimi Hoho addressed two separate cases, including the Kiphire incident and an alleged assault in Kohima. In the second case, a 40-year-old youth leader is accused of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl while performing church duties. The organization expressed deep concern over the violation of public trust, stating that such acts represent a betrayal to the followers and that sexual violence has no place in a civilized society.
