Kohima: The Nagaland Cabinet is fast-tracking the creation of the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority. Officials met Monday to plan a special assembly session aimed at passing legislation for the new body. This move follows rising tension over stalled agreements signed back in February.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio will head a delegation to New Delhi. They need federal approval to grant legislative powers to the authority. The government also wants to double the eastern region development package from 5,000 crore to 10,000 crore rupees.

Passage of the bill stalled previously due to constitutional questions raised by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Cabinet members insisted that protections under Article 371(A) remain intact. They explicitly stated that these constitutional safeguards are "sacred and sacrosanct" and will not be diluted or altered.

The Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation plans a protest rally and total shutdown on July 10. They are frustrated by the slow rollout of the deal. State officials have urged the group to call off the strike, promising that concrete steps to set up the authority are finally underway.
