Kohima: The Nagaland State Biodiversity Board recently marked the International Day for Biological Diversity at St. Xavier College in Jalukie. During the event, Principal Secretary Y. Kikheto Sema encouraged citizens to eliminate plastic use to better protect local ecosystems. He also challenged the younger generation to serve as active ambassadors for nature conservation.
Sema raised significant concerns regarding recent data showing that Nagaland lost 235 square kilometers of forest cover between 2019 and 2023. Despite this decline, he highlighted the state's potential to grow its eco-tourism sector by focusing on biodiversity protection and the preservation of traditional Naga culture.
The event was organized in partnership with the Peren Forest Division. To commemorate the day, officials coordinated a three-day schedule of activities including painting and essay contests, environmental awareness campaigns, and tree-planting drives.
