Kohima: The Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) met with Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav at Lok Bhavan in Kohima on Wednesday to demand urgent state intervention regarding violence against women and stalled criminal investigations. The delegation, led by President Vilanuo Angela Yhome, sought accountability for a series of high profile cases that have caused widespread public alarm.
A primary focus of the discussion was the recent sexual assault of a minor in Dimapur. While authorities have arrested three suspects, the NMA insisted on a transparent investigation and comprehensive support for the victim. The association also addressed ongoing sexual harassment allegations against senior IAS officer Reny Wilfred, questioning how he remains in a position of influence while facing a rape trial in Noklak and numerous workplace complaints. They noted that many complainants have suffered, with some losing their employment after speaking out against the officer.
The NMA highlighted deep frustrations over several cold cases, specifically the unsolved murders of a mother named Pimla and college student Vihozonuo Zao. The group suggested that forensic evidence has been neglected in these matters. Furthermore, they condemned the recent targeting of Nagaland State Women Commission members and the limited progress regarding death threats issued against women advocating for gender-based reservation. The association remarked that the current lack of momentum indicates deep flaws in the legal process.
Beyond internal violence, the delegation described the killing of six Naga civilians in the Khonsakhul area as barbaric and inhumane. The group issued a strong call to the Governor and the President of India to identify and arrest the perpetrators, stating, "The NMA alleged that forensic evidence in these cases appeared to have been overlooked and urged the Governor to ensure a fair and transparent investigation." Governor Yadav assured the delegation that he would examine the evidence and review the specific concerns presented by the association.
