Naga Mothers Association Urges Governor to Act on Rising Violence Against Women

Kohima: A delegation from the Naga Mothers Association met with Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav at Lok Bhavan in Kohima on June 17 to demand urgent intervention regarding a wave of violence against women and girls. Led by NMA president Vilanuo Angela Yhome, the group highlighted several critical cases that they believe require immediate official attention and thorough investigation.

The association specifically raised concerns about a sexual violence case involving a minor in Dimapur. Although three suspects are currently in custody, the NMA emphasized that the case requires rigorous legal follow-up and comprehensive support for the victim. The delegation also addressed allegations against senior IAS officer Reny Wilfred, claiming that delays in justice have exacerbated the suffering of victims who lost their jobs. The NMA noted that the officer remains in a position to harass subordinates while currently facing a separate rape trial in Noklak.

Other unresolved tragedies were presented to the Governor, including the murder of a mother in Pimla and the killing of college student Vihozonuo Zao in Kohima. The association questioned the current status of police investigations into these deaths despite the availability of forensic evidence. Furthermore, the NMA called for federal action regarding the killing of six Naga civilian hostages by armed Kuki militants in the Khonsakhul area.

Addressing the broader climate of intimidation, the delegation cited death threats directed at its advisors for supporting women's reservation. Vilanuo Angela Yhome and her team maintained that the lack of closure in these matters emboldens perpetrators. The group stated that the current lack of accountability has added to the hardship of young professionals seeking justice. Governor Yadav assured the delegation that he would look into the cases discussed during the meeting.
