Kohima: The Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) has formally requested that Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav intervene in a string of unresolved criminal cases involving violence against women. A delegation led by President Vilanuo Angela Yhome met the Governor at Lok Bhavan on June 17 to present their grievances regarding the slow pace of justice across the state.
Among the primary concerns is a sexual violence case against a minor in Dimapur. While three suspects have been arrested, the NMA is demanding a more rigorous investigation and proper rehabilitation for the survivor. The delegation also highlighted allegations of sexual harassment against senior IAS officer Reny Wilfred. They argued that the delayed response has left victims vulnerable, noting that several complainants lost their contractual jobs while attempting to pursue legal action.
The association further condemned the bureaucratic delays that allowed an officer currently facing a rape trial in Noklak to remain in service. This inaction, they claimed, has facilitated ongoing harassment of female employees and legal pressure against members of the Nagaland State Commission for Women. Regarding the professional impact on victims, the group stated, "Loss of livelihood in the midst of seeking justice reveals the suffering these young women professionals have gone through."
The NMA also drew attention to several cold cases, including the Pimla murder and the killing of student Vihozonuo Zao in Kohima. The association expressed concern over insufficient forensic follow-ups and the overall quality of police investigations. Additionally, the group addressed the death threats made against one of its advisors and other advocates for women's reservation, criticizing the quick release of the accused on bail.
Finally, the delegation urged the Governor and the President of India to address the killing of six Naga civilian hostages in the Khonsakhul area, allegedly by armed Kuki cadres. The group is seeking the immediate arrest of those responsible. Following the meeting, the Governor assured the delegation that he would review the cases brought to his attention.
