Kohima: A recent Skills Development Day at Lochomi Baptist Church highlighted the potential for young people in Nagaland to transition from government job seekers to successful entrepreneurs. The event, organized by the Department of Youth Ministry, featured local business owners who shared strategies for turning natural resources into sustainable ventures.
HV Achumi Naga, proprietor of Good Day Chow, explained how he identified a market gap in noodle manufacturing before launching his business in 2022. He encouraged the youth to process local goods like wild apple, ginger, and axone, noting that proper packaging and hard work can meet the rising demand for organic products. He emphasized the freedom found in private enterprise by stating, "Be self-reliant and self-dependent, as government employees receive salaries once a month, whereas entrepreneurs have opportunities to generate income daily."
Addressing the challenges of starting a business, Kipito K Achumi of Peitha Julo recalled his early days of traveling between villages to promote his goods. He noted that while young innovators often lack consistent backing, various government initiatives now provide support. He specifically pointed to the Chief Minister’s Micro Finance Initiative, PMEGP, and the Kisan Credit Card as essential tools for turning concepts into reality.
Both speakers stressed that discipline, perseverance, and a strong faith are the foundations of any long-term success. The event also included practical training sessions, where participants learned skills ranging from soap making to traditional bamboo crafting, further preparing them to explore opportunities outside of conventional employment.
