Naga Entrepreneurs Embrace Digital Transformation to Reach Global Markets

Kohima: Digital platforms are fundamentally reshaping how businesses operate in Nagaland, moving beyond simple marketing tools to become the primary engine for commerce. Local entrepreneurs are increasingly using the internet to bypass geographical limitations, allowing them to showcase products and services to audiences far beyond the state’s borders.

Atoba Longkumer, CEO of Tabernacle Technologies, views this shift as a breakthrough for the region. He noted, "Technology today has created a level playing field where anyone, from any corner of the world, can create content and reach a global audience. We are no longer limited by geographical barriers like mountains, rivers, or oceans."

This digital evolution is also fueling a change in local career perspectives. For many, the traditional reliance on government employment is giving way to a culture of entrepreneurship. Founders like Abokali Jimomi of Organic Nagaland observe that society is becoming more receptive to private enterprise. However, Jimomi cautioned that building a sustainable private sector requires ethical practices and a commitment to protecting the local environment, warning against development driven by mindless consumption.

Despite the benefits, physical retail hurdles remain. Business owners report that converting online attention into sales is a significant challenge, particularly in industries like furniture where customers often want to physically experience products. Success currently hinges on building trust and balancing digital outreach with the enduring power of word of mouth.

To fully capitalize on this transition, experts highlight the need to address the digital divide. While connectivity is improving, many in rural Nagaland still lack the infrastructure and digital literacy required to compete effectively. Longkumer advocates for expanded initiatives, such as better rural internet access and widespread training in emerging fields like artificial intelligence, to ensure the next generation can navigate the evolving global economy.
