Kohima: The Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) has formally requested that the Deputy Commissioner intervene to resolve the city's mounting traffic crisis. In a memorandum submitted this week, the council outlined a strategy to address the infrastructure limitations and vehicular pressure currently stifling the commercial hub.
To manage peak-hour bottlenecks, the council proposed that schools establish dedicated drop-off and pick-up zones within their own campuses. They further recommended that institutions along the same routes stagger their operating hours to prevent overcrowding. Regarding these school-based changes, the council noted, "Any required arrangement should be done by the respective schools during the upcoming summer vacation."
The NCD also pushed for the removal of roadside obstructions, including derelict vehicles and construction debris. They specifically requested that authorities relocate Army vehicles parked along the road between Dhobinalla and Signal Angami village. Additionally, the council called for the immediate clearing of street vendors and sidewalk shops that currently impede pedestrian and vehicle flow, particularly in the New Market area.
Long-term solutions proposed by the group include mandatory parking provisions for all future commercial building permits and an extension of business hours until 9:00 pm to distribute customer traffic more evenly. To support the city's growth as a major commercial center, the NCD urged the Nagaland government to prioritize the construction of new flyovers in the city heart.
