Shillong: Opposition leader Dr. Mukul Sangma challenged students at the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly to look beyond politics for leadership opportunities. He met with interns from five local colleges on Wednesday to discuss their career paths and the value of public life.
These fifth-semester students represent St. Anthony’s College, St. Edmund’s College, Shillong Commerce College, KL Bajoria College, and Synod College. They are completing a 120-hour internship with the Assembly Law Department under the National Education Policy. The kids asked plenty of questions. They wanted to know about his jump from medicine to politics at age 27.
Sangma pushed the group to broaden their knowledge beyond just their textbooks to stay sharp. He reminded them that while schools like St. Anthony’s and St. Edmund’s have long fed the ranks of politicians and civil servants, the hunger to lead must come from within. Everyone starts as a follower, but that should change.
"Leadership is required in every profession," Sangma said, urging the interns to push for the top. He insisted that having the confidence to guide others is just as necessary for a doctor or a merchant as it is for a lawmaker.
