MP Saleng Sangma pushes for more UPSC test sites in Northeast

Shillong: Tura MP Saleng Sangma is demanding more UPSC examination centres throughout the Northeast. He wants the government to bring testing locations closer to tribal candidates living in remote areas. Sangma pushed for these changes during a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice.

Currently, the UPSC holds the Mains exam in only a few regional hubs like Dispur, Shillong, Kohima, Imphal, and Itanagar. Sangma highlighted that the region's rugged terrain and volatile weather make travel extremely difficult for local students. He noted that expanding access is essential to ensure candidates can appear for these tests without facing extreme strain.

"Increasing the number of local centres is essential to ensure candidates can appear for these tests without undue hardship," Sangma stated. The committee also met with the Secretary of the Department of Personnel and Training and the Secretary of the UPSC to discuss central job vacancies and the impact of the CSAT component on the Preliminary Examination.
