Motphran Vendors Demand Urgent Safety Upgrades for Khasi Market

Shillong: Indigenous vendors at Shillong’s Khasi Market have hit their limit. They sent a formal plea to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma this week, demanding a total overhaul of their current site at the Pahsyntiew Ri-Bhoi Parking Lot. Nearly 90 traders, represented by the Synjuk ki Nongdie Jain Khasi Market, claim the facility is a death trap waiting to happen.

The market relocated from the Motphran Bridge area, but the new spot is failing. Vendors complain about poor ventilation and a lack of exits. These gaps leave traders and customers exposed to fire and natural disasters. The group wants wider entry points and dedicated escape routes to keep people safe.

The association stated that the market is a vital source of livelihood for hundreds of indigenous families, particularly elderly women. Beyond structural safety, the vendors want better toilets, scientific waste disposal, fire gear, and bright, energy-efficient lighting. They hope the government turns the space into a disaster-resilient hub that actually serves the thousands of people who visit every day.
