Kohima: Health officials in Mon gathered on June 11 for a workshop focused on Vaccine Preventable Disease surveillance and preparations for the National Immunization Day scheduled for June 28. Held at the District Hospital, the event aimed to bolster the district's ability to monitor immunisation programs and address gaps in vaccination coverage.
Dr. Wungyong Konyak, the District Programme Officer for UIP and RCH, opened the session by emphasizing that a robust monitoring system is vital for disease control. He urged staff to focus on increasing vaccination uptake, noting that, "prevention remains the cornerstone of public health." Participants received reorientation on campaign strategies, including logistics, cold-chain management, and community mobilization efforts to reach underserved populations.
Dr. M. A. H. Azhar, a Surveillance Medical Officer from Mokokchung, led the technical session. He detailed the global progress of polio eradication and reaffirmed that India has remained free of wild poliovirus since 2011. Dr. Azhar explained that maintaining this status requires high routine immunisation coverage and sensitive Acute Flaccid Paralysis surveillance.
The workshop brought together medical officers, nurses, and programme managers to finalize microplanning for the upcoming campaign. The training concluded with officials establishing stronger coordination protocols to ensure all children under five years of age receive the polio vaccine during the June initiative.
