Kohima: Health officials in Mon hosted a one-day training session on June 11 at the district hospital to bolster disease surveillance and organize preparations for the National Immunization Day scheduled for June 28. The workshop brought together medical officers, nurses, and program managers to address the ongoing challenges of vaccine-preventable diseases in the region.
Dr. Wungyong Konyak, the District Program Officer for Universal Immunization Program and Reproductive and Child Health, opened the event by emphasizing that consistent surveillance is essential for tracking program effectiveness. Addressing the attendees, Dr. Konyak said, "VPD surveillance in monitoring immunization programmes and ensuring timely detection and control of diseases" remains a top priority for the district.
Surveillance Medical Officer Dr. M.A.H. Azhar led technical sessions regarding India's polio eradication efforts. He noted that the country has maintained its polio-free status since 2011, a milestone achieved through rigorous acute flaccid paralysis tracking and high vaccination rates. The training also focused on the practical aspects of the upcoming immunization drive, such as microplanning, logistics management, and social mobilization tactics to better reach high-risk populations.
