Modi spotlights Meghalaya turmeric at G7 Summit

Shillong: Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced Meghalaya’s Lakadong turmeric to global leaders at the 52nd G7 Summit in Evian, France. He aimed to highlight India’s agricultural heritage. The spice sat alongside Ramban Honey, Nagauri Ashwagandha, and Banarasi silk stoles.

Farmers in the Jaintia Hills grow this crop. The red soil and heavy rains give it high curcumin levels. The spice carries a Geographical Indication tag, protecting its origin and quality.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma praised the move on social media. He said, "Meghalaya’s globally renowned GI-tagged Lakadong turmeric takes center stage yet again at the #G7 Summit, presented to world leaders by Hon’ble Prime Minister @narendramodi ji."

The move helps local growers. Meghalaya recently exported batches to the Netherlands and the UK. This G7 showcase creates more momentum for the state’s organic spice trade.
