Shillong: Prime Minister Narendra Modi put Meghalaya’s Lakadong turmeric in front of world leaders at the G7 Summit in France. This move highlights the state's farming output on a massive stage. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma took to social media to thank the Prime Minister for the gesture.
"Thank you, Hon'ble Prime Minister, for showcasing Meghalaya's golden spice to the world and highlighting the rich agricultural heritage and potential of our farmers," Sangma wrote. The spice hails from the West Jaintia Hills district. It holds a Geographical Indication tag to prove its origins.
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia also weighed in on the event. He believes the recognition signals a shift in how the world views premium goods from Northeast India. The crop is famous for high curcumin levels. This compound gives the spice its health perks.
Local women farmers drive the production in the Lakadong region. Their work keeps rural families afloat. Officials expect the G7 exposure to boost exports and pump new life into the state's economy.
