Aizawl: Pharmacies across Mizoram shuttered their operations on Wednesday as part of a coordinated nationwide strike. Organized by the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists, the protest highlights growing resistance to the rapid expansion of digital pharmacy platforms. Local chemists argue that this industry shift threatens traditional businesses while undermining essential regulatory oversight.
The Mizoram Chemists and Druggists Association expressed concerns that the current lack of strict oversight on online sales could lead to the misuse of addictive substances. Members also voiced fears that some platforms distribute counterfeit or substandard medications. The association noted that deliveries are often handled by unverified individuals, which creates significant gaps in accountability and patient safety.
While the union clarified that it does not oppose the concept of digital pharmacy services, it is calling for a robust legal framework to govern the sector. The group wants clear guidelines to ensure transparency and public health safety. During the protest, pharmacies located within government and private hospitals remained open to ensure patients could still access vital treatments. State officials from the Food and Drugs Administration monitored the shutdown throughout the day to help manage any potential disruptions to public access.
