Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma chaired a governing body meeting on Friday to evaluate development and infrastructure expansion at Zoram Medical College and Hospital. Attended by Health Minister Lalrinpuii, School Education Minister Dr. Vanlalthlana, and MLA Baryl Vanneihsangi, the session aimed to prioritize essential upgrades for the institution.

A primary focus of the meeting was the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Officials highlighted that the department currently relies on a single physician to balance both clinical and faculty duties, prompting members to call for urgent strengthening of the unit.

The board also reviewed the progress of the Critical Care Block, which is currently under construction using Corporate Social Responsibility funding. Members emphasized the importance of procuring necessary medical equipment and ensuring the facility remains effective once it becomes operational. Because not all proposed projects can be completed at once, the board established a priority list for upcoming developments.

Officials reported significant growth at the facility over the past two years. Recent improvements include the addition of 30 cabins and 13 intensive care units, alongside the restoration of numerous non-functional beds. With a total capacity of 517 beds, the institution is now the largest hospital in Mizoram.

Academic progress remains a key milestone for the college as well. The facility introduced ten new postgraduate seats in October 2024, which currently serve nine students. Additionally, the college recently saw its third batch of MBBS students successfully complete their medical education.
