Aizawl: The Mizoram government held a high-level meeting on Tuesday to expedite the implementation of a peace agreement signed with the Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic). Chaired by Home Minister K Sapdanga, the session focused on addressing a charter of demands submitted by the faction led by Lalhmingthanga Sanate. Senior government officials, including the Home Secretary and advisors to the Chief Minister, attended the meeting to coordinate these efforts across multiple departments.
Discussions centered on rehabilitation plans for surrendered cadres and significant infrastructure improvements in Hmar-inhabited areas across northern and northeastern Mizoram. Proposed development initiatives include enhancing road networks, establishing new educational institutions, and opening additional government offices. The government also plans to support local farmers by promoting agro-based industries and other land-based livelihoods.
To ensure these commitments move forward, the government directed the relevant departments to take immediate action and submit regular progress reports. This review follows the landmark peace accord signed on April 14, which brought an end to the state's last remaining insurgency. Shortly after the agreement, 43 cadres led by Sanate formally laid down their arms during a homecoming ceremony held at Sesawng on April 30.
