Aizawl: Thirty-three students pledged their eyes to science this week in Aizawl. This push brings Mizoram's total registered donor count to 9,345. Health and Family Welfare Principal Director Dr. Lalthlengliani confirmed the numbers on Tuesday following the 41st Eye Donation Fortnight programme.
Dr. Lalthlengliani noted the climb in pledges proves that the public is finally grasping the impact of corneal donation. She said, "the rise in pledges reflected increasing awareness about corneal donation and its potential to restore vision among people suffering from corneal blindness."
Mizoram launched its eye bank on July 31, 2008. The state finished its first corneal transplant on September 25, 2009. Since then, 632 people have donated their eyes after death. Currently, 400 people are waiting on the recipient list. Officials recently honored the families of 67 donors from the 2025-26 period with certificates of appreciation.
The eye bank remains busy. Workers retrieved 42 corneas between April and July of this financial year. Surgeons have already completed 23 transplant procedures during that same window. Recovery is a race against the clock. Staff must retrieve the cornea from the deceased quickly to make the transplant viable for the recipient.

State records show the donor registry held 9,312 names before the students signed up on Monday.
