Aizawl: Dr. Vanlalsiama Chhangte, medical director at the Ebenezer Medical Center in Aizawl, landed the first Citizen Liaison Volunteer of the Year Award ever granted in India. Vice Consul Warren Newton handed over the honors at Hotel Regency on September 7. The US Consulate General in Kolkata created the prize. It included a certificate signed by US Ambassador Sergio Gor and a memento.

The award celebrates the clinic's support for Collin Mayfield, an American citizen. Mayfield arrived in Mizoram on December 1, 2025, after getting hurt in Myanmar. He spent a month at the center. Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Lalrinliana Varte performed the surgery that helped him recover well enough to fly back to the United States.

This marks the first time the consulate has distributed this specific award within the country. Chhangte noted the facility treats everyone, no matter their bank account or home country. He thanked the international community for acknowledging the staff's dedication. Regarding the center's goal, he said its mission was to "Transform Lives through Healthcare."

The doctor plans to keep pushing for better medical standards across Mizoram. He says the global recognition boosts the morale of the entire medical team, including the nurses and local staff.
