Mizoram authorities arrest man for poaching state animal

Aizawl: Kawnpui Forest Range officials arrested 41-year-old RT Thanga for poaching a serow. The arrest happened in the Kolasib district near the Assam border. Thanga lives in the Kawnpui Hmarveng locality. He allegedly killed the animal, which serves as the official state mascot for Mizoram.

Forest officers tracked Thanga during a sting operation. They caught him holding the animal's meat and a trophy. The state Environment, Forests and Climate Change department confirmed the charges involve illegal hunting and possession of a protected species. They seized all remains found at the scene.

"The serow is a protected wild animal and is the official state animal of Mizoram," officials stated. Authorities maintain a strict stance on protecting the species from local hunters.
