Shillong: Troops of monkeys are swarming Lawsohtun Block 6. Residents face an unprecedented surge in human-wildlife encounters. The animals are raiding kitchens and stealing food from homes. Panic grows in the streets.
The trouble began last Monday. Resident Alvarin Marwein reported a monkey breached her home before fleeing to a neighbor's terrace. She noted, "As a resident of Lawsohtun Block 6, I would like to raise a concern regarding the recent sightings of monkeys in our locality."
Witnesses report spotting four to five monkeys near the Lawsohtun Cemetery. Another local woman lost a rice cooker and a pot during a kitchen raid on Thursday morning. A resident later spotted a monkey near her shop but stayed back in fear. No attacks or aggressive behaviors have been reported yet.
Parents worry for children walking to school. Locals have informed the Rangbah Shnong to ensure public safety. Residents suspect deforestation in Lum Shillong is driving the animals into town. They want the government to act before the situation turns dangerous. The community demands a balance between urban growth and wildlife conservation.
