Guwahati: The body of journalist Papu Jyotishi was discovered in the Gangadhar River near the India-Bangladesh border in Assam’s Dhubri district late Tuesday night. Jyotishi, the former president of the Golakganj Press Club, had been missing since June 7 after disappearing near Chhotguma village.
Local residents spotted the remains floating in the water and notified the authorities. A police team arrived at the Binnachar area to recover the body, which was found in a decomposed state. Officers confirmed the identity of the victim after discovering his official press card inside his shirt pocket.
Investigators have not yet determined the cause of death or identified the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials are currently considering all possibilities, including foul play, accidents, or suicide. A police official stated, "The exact cause of death will be known only after the post-mortem examination report is received. A detailed investigation has been initiated from all possible angles."
The death has caused significant distress among the local media community, with many colleagues calling for a transparent and thorough inquiry. Police expect to release further findings once forensic and medical examinations are complete.
