Imphal: Mirabai Chanu claimed India's first gold medal of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The 31-year-old dominated the women's 48 kg weightlifting event. She finished with a total of 190 kg. This included 85 kg in the snatch and 105 kg in the clean and jerk. Both marks set new Commonwealth and Games records.
This win marks her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold. She previously took top honors in 2018 and 2022. It is her fourth medal overall in the competition. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised her consistency. "The talented Mirabai Chanu once again showcased her skills at the Commonwealth Games with a stunning performance in the 48 kg category and winning Gold," Modi wrote on X.
Chanambam Rishikanta Singh also found the podium. He secured a silver medal in the men's 60 kg category. He reached a total lift of 264 kg. During the snatch, he cleared 121 kg to set a new Commonwealth Games record. He added 143 kg in the clean and jerk. This performance stands as his personal best.
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh celebrated the haul. He noted that the athletes displayed immense discipline. The Chief Minister shared his pride on Facebook. He stated that the pair brought glory to Manipur and the entire nation. Modi also lauded Rishikanta for his determination. The Prime Minister wished both athletes success in their future endeavors.
