Imphal: Manipur-born weightlifters Saikhom Mirabai Chanu and Chanambam Rishikanta Singh dominated the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Sunday. Chanu claimed gold in the women's 48 kg category, marking her third consecutive win in the event. She lifted a total of 190 kg. This included 85 kg in the snatch and 105 kg in the clean and jerk. Both marks set new Commonwealth and Games records.
The 31-year-old athlete faced early pressure. She missed her opening 82 kg snatch attempt and her first 105 kg clean and jerk lift before finding her rhythm. Nigerian athlete Ruth Asuquo Nyong took silver, while Malaysia's Irene Jane Henry earned bronze. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised her consistency on X, stating, "The talented Mirabai Chanu once again showcased her skills at the Commonwealth Games with a stunning performance in the 48 kg category and winning Gold."
Chanambam Rishikanta Singh made his own history by securing India's first silver medal at the Games in the men's 60 kg division. He tallied 264 kg total. His 121 kg snatch set a new Commonwealth Games record. The 28-year-old nearly claimed gold but failed to clear 151 kg on his final attempt. His achievement resonates deeply in his hometown of Ngairangbam Makha Leikai. He is the first athlete from the locality to medal at the Games.
The victory came amid personal hardship for the Rishikanta family. His father is currently in Jaipur receiving medical treatment. He could not watch his son perform. His uncle, Chanambam Ibomcha, noted the family's mixed emotions. "We watched the competition with so much tension because we wanted him to return with a medal. When he finally secured the silver, tears came to our eyes," he said. His mother, a daily wage labourer, previously funded much of his training. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh lauded both athletes for their discipline and for bringing pride to Manipur.
