Shillong: The hunt for a new Vice-Chancellor at North Eastern Hill University is stalled. The Ministry of Education has not yet named a chairman to lead the search committee. The process sits in limbo. The NEHU Executive Council already picked two members for the panel, but work cannot move forward without a lead.
The Ministry posted an advertisement for the role on May 20. This came ahead of the July 26 exit for the current head, Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla. Applications closed on June 18 through the government SAMARTH portal. Requirements include ten years of professor experience and a clean track record of academic leadership. Candidates should be under 65.
The position pays a fixed monthly salary of Rs 2.10 lakh plus allowances. Tension is mounting at the institution. Sources confirmed the reality of the situation, noting, “The selection process will commence only after the chairman of the search committee is appointed.” Concerns grow as the university has faced a leadership vacuum since November 2024 due to the Vice-Chancellor's prolonged absence.
