Shillong: The Jaintia Coal Owners, Miners, Suppliers and Workers Association has called for a mass public uprising on June 22. This announcement comes as their hunger strike enters its 20th day in the Jaintia Hills. The organization invited the public to a general meeting at the protest site to decide the next steps in their ongoing standoff with the Meghalaya government.
Protesters are demanding that the government reduce the minimum coal mining lease area from 100 hectares to three acres. While miners view this change as essential for their economic survival, the state Mining and Geology department has stalled the proposal. Joint Secretary MB Tongper stated that the government requires "proper justification" along with facts and figures before it will consider the request or refer it to the Centre.
The physical toll on participants is rising as the protest continues. Marshall SB Biam, the association president, has remained on an indefinite hunger strike since June 1. Another member recently had to withdraw due to declining health and was replaced by Mewanbor Biam to ensure the demonstration remains active. For many local families, the government's insistence on existing acreage requirements is perceived as a direct threat to their primary livelihoods.
