Kohima: The Meriema Village Youth Organisation (MVYO) has issued a formal appeal to government departments, institutions, and the general public to abandon common misspellings and labels in favor of traditional place names. The organization is requesting that the public use Meriema Village and Pfuratsie Junction rather than the frequently used variants Merema, Merima, or High Court Junction.
In a recent press release, the group emphasized that these traditional names are rooted in the community's heritage and carry deep historical significance. The organization noted that the current trend of using names like High Court Junction ignores the local legacy of the area, even though the court serves as a major landmark. The MVYO stated, "The names Meriema and Pfuratsie originate from the village's traditional heritage and carry significant cultural meaning that reflects the identity and history of the community."
The group is now calling for consistent adoption of the traditional terminology across all official correspondence, signage, and public communications. By reclaiming these names, the organization aims to preserve the cultural identity of the region for future records and daily public discourse.
