Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma kicked off the two-day International Conference on Women Farmers and Sustainable Organic Agriculture in Shillong today. The event, hosted at the State Convention Centre, brings together global experts to talk shop about sustainable growth. The government teamed up with IFOAM-Organics Asia and KfW to pull it off.

Sangma used the platform to launch Phase II of the Meghalaya State Organic Mission for 2024-2028. He also oversaw the distribution of cheques to local farmers. The state wants to boost organic output. It is a big bet on the future. Sangma praised the local matrilineal structure for putting women in charge of the land and farming traditions.

The Chief Minister told the crowd that women are central to the state's success. "Women have always been at the heart of agriculture and grassroots movements in Meghalaya," Sangma said. His administration is now working to support farmer-centric groups and save indigenous knowledge. He expects the Northeast to become a major player in the global organic market soon.
