Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has tasked the state Education Department with launching a targeted strategy to improve Meghalaya's standing in the Performance Grading Index. The directive follows a report from the Union Ministry of Education, which placed Meghalaya at the bottom of the national list with a score of 448 out of 1,000. It remains the only state in the country categorized as Akanshi-3, the lowest possible grading band.
During a June 3 review meeting, officials analyzed the specific gaps contributing to the poor results. Sangma noted that reporting challenges significantly impacted the state's rating. The government plans to strengthen these reporting mechanisms while prioritizing school infrastructure development to drive better learning outcomes.
Despite the low ranking, the Chief Minister has defended the state's overall educational progress. He pointed to structural issues, such as multiple schools operating on single campuses with separate registrations, as factors that skewed the evaluation. Sangma remains confident that ongoing reforms, including improved pass rates and reduced dropout numbers, will lead to better results in future assessments.
While Meghalaya struggled, neighboring Assam saw a significant boost in its standing. Assam climbed into the Prachesta-3 category after adding over 82 points to its previous total. Meghalaya's current performance remains particularly low in governance and learning outcomes, prompting calls for more rigorous interventions.
