Shillong: The Meghalaya State Zoo has announced the birth of a Stump-tailed macaque, marking the first time this vulnerable primate species has successfully bred at the facility. Zoo officials report that both the mother and newborn are healthy, and veterinary staff are monitoring the infant's development closely.
This milestone follows the arrival of a breeding pair transferred from Aizawl Zoological Park in Mizoram through an animal exchange program. Officials believe the successful birth proves the macaques have adapted well to their new environment and the unique climate of Shillong.
Stump-tailed macaques face significant survival challenges in the wild, including habitat fragmentation and human encroachment. D. Sathiyan, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests for Wildlife and Biodiversity, stated that the development reflects the sustained efforts being made towards scientific wildlife management and conservation in the state. He added that such achievements help educate the public about the importance of protecting biodiversity.
