Shillong: The Meghalaya State Zoo has hit a major conservation milestone following the birth of a healthy Stump-tailed Macaque. This marks the first time the zoo has successfully bred the species, which is currently listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List due to habitat loss and human interference.
The parents of the newborn arrived at the facility from Aizawl Zoological Park as part of an animal exchange initiative. Zoo officials credit the successful birth to consistent veterinary support, specialized scientific management, and the animals adapting well to their new home.
The infant is currently being monitored by a veterinary team and continues to bond with its mother and troop. D. Sathiyan praised the accomplishment as a direct result of the state's dedication to wildlife preservation. He stated, "The birth is an encouraging outcome of sustained efforts towards wildlife conservation in the State."
This achievement serves as a vital contribution to ex-situ conservation programs. By managing these animals in a controlled environment, the zoo aims to protect threatened species while increasing public awareness about the role modern facilities play in safeguarding biodiversity for the future.
