Meghalaya Set to License Bike Taxis Within Two Weeks

Shillong: Meghalaya will begin issuing official licences for app-based bike taxi services like Rapido in the next two weeks. Transport Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar confirmed the move on Tuesday as the state pushes to bring ride-hailing operations under its legal framework.

Authorities are still gathering data to finalize the system. Officials will meet next week to review applications and clear those with valid documentation. Until then, the state remains in a transitional phase as it builds out the regulatory structure.

The government is not sitting idle. Illegal operators face immediate consequences. Minister Dhar said, “I have instructed my officers to strengthen field enforcement and take action against those who are moving illegally on the road.”

Transport department teams have received orders to hit the streets now. They will target any bike taxis currently running without proper government approval.
