Meghalaya Rural Tap Water Coverage Hits 84 Percent

Shillong: Meghalaya’s rural tap water access surged from 4,550 households in 2019 to 5,47,077 homes today. Public Health Engineering Minister Marcuise N Marak confirmed the jump to 84.06 percent coverage while launching the Jal Utsav 2026 campaign on July 21. Water is now flowing in 3,616 villages that reached Har Ghar Jal status.

The state aims to turn water conservation into a grassroots effort. Marak described the new campaign as "a people's movement" designed to push citizens toward protecting local resources. The initiative centers on the theme Celebrating Water, Securing Sources. It relies on three core pillars: Celebrate, Understand, and Protect.

Engineers, district staff, and Village Water and Sanitation Committees built this infrastructure. The government now shifts focus to sustainability. With the Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 extended to December 2028, officials will move away from simple construction to managing dependable, long-term water services. Three new systems will track this progress: the Sujalam Bharat monitoring platform, Jal Arpan Diwas for infrastructure ownership, and the Jal Utsav public participation drive.

Commissioner and Secretary of the Public Health Engineering Department Pravin Bakshi released an annual calendar for the Rajya Jal Utsav and Lok Jal Utsav programs. These events will run until early 2027. The schedule features river clean-ups, water budgeting, marathon races, school contests, and laboratory visits. A committee representative from Diengiong village reported that piped water has already drastically cut the daily labor of fetching supplies by hand.
