Shillong: Meghalaya is turning tourism into a major economic engine. The state saw 18 lakh visitors in 2025 across its Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo Hills. Officials now plan to move beyond natural scenery to build a permanent industry.
The government is pushing a massive homestay expansion. Under the Chief Minister's Meghalaya Homestay Mission Scheme, locals get a 70 percent subsidy to open their doors. The state wants 3,000 new homestays by 2028. This plan should create 6,000 jobs. High-end entrepreneurs can grab subsidies reaching Rs 80 lakh for boutique projects.
Infrastructure is getting a facelift. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced nearly Rs 39,800 crore for highway projects. These roads will link major spots like Sohra, Mawlynnong, and Krang Suri Falls. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also greenlit Rs 229 crore for sustainable livelihood and ecotourism ventures.
The state is also leaning into its concert economy. Seven major festivals drew three lakh people this year. These events brought in Rs 133 crore. Meanwhile, officials are building up adventure spots like the Umiam water activities. Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat noted that new facilities, such as the state's first sailing yacht, "could help generate employment and attract more visitors."
Officials are pushing regulatory changes with the proposed Tourist Trade Act, 2025. They want to train local staff while keeping community ownership at the center. The goal is to keep the state a top sustainable destination for years to come.
