Shillong: The Meghalaya government is moving ahead with plans to build crematoriums across the state in a phased, prioritized rollout. This initiative follows a direct order from the High Court of Meghalaya issued on April 15, which prompted the Chief Secretary to hold a review meeting regarding the project's progress.
A status report filed by the Additional Advocate General confirms that the Finance Department has approved the necessary funding for all proposed sites. While authorities have secured land for the project, the process of finalizing specific locations remains ongoing. Once the state releases the funds to individual districts, construction work will begin.
During a recent court hearing, the Amicus Curiae called for swift action once land is allocated through stakeholder consultations. The Amicus Curiae also suggested that officials evaluate the potential for new sites at Kenmynsaw and Syntein villages within the Mawsynram Block of East Khasi Hills. The court hearing concluded with a request for stakeholders to finalize land allocation, and the matter is now listed for July 15. The Amicus Curiae emphasized that once land is identified and allocated, "district administrations should be directed to begin construction promptly."
