Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma officially started operations at the Meghalaya Teacher Training Academy on Thursday. The state aims to repair deep-seated issues in its education system. Officials and education stakeholders gathered in Shillong to mark the opening.
"Today marks the true beginning of the academy, its vision, its purpose, and its functioning," Sangma said. The facility acts as an autonomous body to fix a system where only 17 percent of teachers finished professional development last year.
National rankings recently placed Meghalaya in the lowest tier for student learning. To combat this, the government is moving away from one-time workshops to a model of constant training. The academy uses a hub-and-spoke design to link central experts with local institutes. It will use data analytics and new technology to track progress.
Sangma acknowledged the difficult road ahead. The state recently committed 800 crore rupees to restructure salaries for 23,000 teachers. He believes these structural changes are necessary to see real progress. The academy will now focus on steady, step-by-step improvements to fix the state’s failing educational foundation.
