Shillong: Meghalaya is scrambling to climb the national educational ladder. The state government launched a fresh action plan after landing at the bottom of the Performing Grading Index. Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui refuses to view the index as a mere scorecard. He sees it as a rough blueprint for fixing the state's broken system.
Bad data hurts. Rymbui blames the poor showing on under-reporting. Officials missed the mark on basic school infrastructure. Toilets exist in many buildings, but the digital records remain blank. Rymbui ordered his staff to fix the paperwork immediately. "The true picture has to be reflected in the data," Rymbui said.
The ministry also challenged claims about connectivity. The PGI report cites a lack of network access in schools, but Rymbui claims 90 percent of the state holds a signal. Beyond data entry, the state is pushing for physical upgrades. Workers are installing solar lights in over 800 schools. Teachers have new orders to help students struggling with science and math. Private schools must now also fall in line and report their statistics correctly.
