Meghalaya Moves Supreme Court to Reverse Bail for Honeymoon Murder Suspect

Shillong: The Meghalaya government asked the Supreme Court on Thursday to block the release of Sonam Raghuvanshi. She stands accused of murdering her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon in Sohra. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that Raghuvanshi might flee if she walks free.

Mehta argued that a small clerical mistake in a legal citation prompted the bail grant. He insisted this error failed to justify her release. The Supreme Court bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and Sheel Nagu scheduled a hearing for Friday.

Police arrested Raghuvanshi in June 2025. Investigators claim she hired killers to execute her husband. The couple vanished on May 23, 2025, and search teams later recovered Raja Raghuvanshi's body from a deep gorge.

The Meghalaya High Court previously upheld the bail. The judges noted that police failed to properly communicate the reasons for her arrest. They described the situation as a "total non-application of judicious mind" by the investigating agency.

The victim's family backs the state government's challenge. Bipin Raghuvanshi, the brother of the deceased, worries that the suspect could threaten witnesses or escape entirely. He remains hopeful that the legal system will hold her accountable.
