Meghalaya Implements Strict Measures Following African Swine Fever Outbreak

Shillong: The Meghalaya government is intensifying surveillance and containment efforts following a recent outbreak of African Swine Fever across four districts. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma confirmed that while the number of reported cases remains limited, the state is treating the situation with urgency to prevent further transmission.

The viral outbreak has impacted the East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, and Ri-Bhoi districts. Specifically, authorities have identified infections in blocks including Pynursla, Mawlai, Mawthadraishan, Mairang, Umsning, and Bhoirymbong. The presence of the virus near the Regional Pig Breeding Farm at Kyrdemkulai has heightened concerns for the local agricultural sector.

Under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, officials have established one-kilometre infected zones and ten-kilometre surveillance zones around affected premises. These designations trigger mandatory movement restrictions to limit the spread of the disease.

The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department has enforced a total ban on the movement of live pigs, pork, and feed into or out of the affected areas. Additionally, all local slaughterhouses and pig markets are closed until further notice. Authorities have also prohibited swill feeding and deployed veterinary teams to monitor biosecurity compliance. While African Swine Fever does not affect humans, it remains highly contagious among pigs and poses a significant risk to the state economy.
