Shillong: The Meghalaya High Court has ordered the state government to disclose the status of CCTV surveillance infrastructure within all police stations. A division bench, led by Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W. Diengdoh, issued the directive while hearing a Public Interest Litigation focused on police transparency and accountability.
The government must file an affidavit within four weeks detailing camera placement, the scope of surveillance, and how long footage is stored. The court specifically requested information regarding the Laban Police Station in Shillong as part of the broader inquiry into state facilities.
Regarding the specifics of the report, the bench stated, "The affidavit shall set out the data with respect to CCTV cameras installed in the Laban Police Station as well as other police stations in the State of Meghalaya, their locations and the memory of the footage, among other details."
Petitioner Kishan K. Nongkynrih brought the matter to court to challenge current monitoring mechanisms. Additional Advocate General K. Khan represented the state and requested extra time to compile the requested data. The court granted the four-week extension and instructed the government to provide an advance copy of the filing to the petitioner before the next hearing, which is set for July 24.
