Meghalaya government probes SAI Computers contract in Garo Hills

Shillong: The Meghalaya government formed a committee to audit SAI Computers Limited after a wave of public anger in the Garo Hills. Local residents and pressure groups want the firm gone. They cite frequent blackouts, made-up fines, and inflated bills as proof that the company cannot handle the job.

The company acts as an Input-Based Distribution Franchisee for towns like Dalu, Phulbari, and Nongalbibra. Their list of chores includes everything from fixing transformers to reading meters and collecting cash. It is a big job. Recently, the company got the boot from Mawsynram after similar complaints stalled their operations there.

MeECL Chairman Sanjay Goyal says his team is digging into the problems. A Chief Engineer from the Western Zone leads the review team. Goyal addressed the ongoing situation by stating, "Some issues related to power supply have been resolved while the matter of billing is being examined by the Committee."

Goyal also warned that the state is cracking down on power theft. He claims that honest customers pay for the crimes of thieves. Officials have the power to punish offenders under the Electricity Act, and they plan to use it.
