Shillong: The Meghalaya government is preparing to recruit 1,000 new police personnel to address persistent staffing shortages. This move follows a large-scale induction of 3,000 officers earlier this year, but officials indicate that natural attrition and retirements have already created new vacancies across the force.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who oversees the Home Department, confirmed the plan on Thursday. He noted that the Police Recruitment Board is finalizing the groundwork for the selection process. While a specific start date remains unconfirmed, the government expects to issue official advertisements for the positions within a few months.
Addressing the need to bolster the state's capabilities, Tynsong stated, "The current shortfall is estimated to be around 1,000 positions." This recruitment drive represents a significant opportunity for local youth seeking stable employment, though observers and community leaders are watching the timeline closely to ensure the process avoids historical delays.
Beyond the hiring initiative, the Home Department plans to launch outreach programs in remote villages. These workshops aim to increase public knowledge of legal frameworks and improve the relationship between law enforcement and the community. Local organizations are expected to monitor the upcoming recruitment drive, with particular focus on how the government handles age eligibility requirements.
