Meghalaya Education Minister Rejects Claims of Scrapping UGC Pay Scales

Shillong: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui hit back at critics on Saturday. He denied accusations that the state intends to scrap University Grants Commission pay scales for local colleges. The Voice of the People Party recently claimed the government wanted to weaken higher education by dumping these regulations.

Critics fear budget cuts. They worry about falling academic standards across Meghalaya. Rymbui brushed off the claims. He stated the government is currently "carefully examining" issues related to UGC regulations to determine what would be in the best interest of the state.

The minister also addressed disputes regarding how teaching posts are filled. Governing bodies manage deficit colleges. The state only steps in if poor management hurts student learning. Rymbui noted that all new college hires now meet UGC entry requirements. This marks a shift from past practices.
