Shillong: Meghalaya cleared 32.76 crore digital transactions throughout the 2025-26 fiscal year. Banking officials confirmed this growth on Thursday. The state now nears 10 lakh Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana accounts. This surge highlights a shift toward digital banking across the state.
Olden Nongpluh, General Manager of RBI Shillong, credits the JAM Trinity and Direct Benefit Transfer programs for this progress. He stated, "98 per cent of bank account holders in Meghalaya now use at least one digital mode of transaction." These efforts aim for total digital adoption.
State Bank of India leads the charge with 3.55 lakh accounts, representing 36 per cent of the total 9.99 lakh PMJDY accounts recorded by March 31, 2026. SBI Chief Manager H Khongsai confirmed the bank maintains 113 branches and 300 service points in the region. Most SBI customers now avoid physical tellers, preferring digital channels instead.
Social security enrollment is also climbing. Residents signed up 5.08 lakh beneficiaries for life insurance, 9.36 lakh for accident coverage, and 1.02 lakh for pension plans. RBI officials focused on cyber safety to protect these new users. Sixteen financial literacy centers now reach seven lakh people across 6,169 villages. Authorities plan to focus on rural digital resilience in the coming months.
