Meghalaya converts former COVID checkpoint into highway food hub

Shillong: Meghalaya officials are gutting the former Umling facilitation centre to build a high-end food court. The site once enforced strict COVID-19 entry protocols. Now, it will serve travelers on the Shillong-Guwahati highway. Crews demolished the old checkpoint to clear space for the project.

The state wants big names at the rest stop. Plans include outlets for Starbucks, KFC, Burger King, and Subway. A Tourist Information Centre will also sit on the site to push regional travel. The government will keep a foothold here, too. A dedicated counter will handle tasks for the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act. Officials claim the site will "improve the travel experience" for everyone on the road.

Construction work is underway. The state hopes to finish by August 15, but workers face a tight squeeze. Sources suggest a launch near Durga Puja is more likely.
