Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday to present a memorandum outlining critical state issues. The meeting addressed concerns ranging from illegal immigration to the constitutional recognition of regional languages and tribal protections.
Sangma urged the central government to bolster efforts to curb illegal immigration into the state. He suggested that the implementation of the Inner Line Permit system and the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act would provide effective regulatory tools. Both measures have previously received support through resolutions passed by the Meghalaya State Assembly.
The Chief Minister also requested the inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. He argued that official recognition is vital for preserving the cultural identity of the region's indigenous communities. Additionally, Sangma called for comprehensive national consultations regarding any proposed amendments to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. He emphasized that any changes must strengthen governance and safeguards for tribal populations across the Northeast.
The memorandum further addressed local organizational concerns regarding the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. Sangma highlighted how specific legal amendments could impact the operational assets and functionality of non-governmental organizations in the state. Following the discussion, the Chief Minister expressed optimism about the dialogue. He stated, “We have placed before the Hon’ble Home Minister several important matters concerning Meghalaya and its people. I thank him for his patient hearing and understanding of our concerns.”
