Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated new eco-tourism cottages and a glass restaurant in Mawrah on June 5, marking the village as a prime example of conservation-led growth. Once burdened by water scarcity and forest depletion, the area has undergone a successful transformation through the collaborative efforts of local residents and government agencies to restore water sources and expand vegetation.
Highlighting the village's journey, the Chief Minister remarked, "What was once a village struggling with drying springs, water scarcity, and depleted forests is today a model of environmental restoration and sustainable tourism." He described Mawrah as a shining example of how community engagement directly improves livelihoods and sustainability.
During the event, which coincided with World Environment Day, Sangma joined students to plant Miyawaki tree saplings to promote a greener future for the state. He later planted a rhododendron at the Rhododendron Trail in Upper Shillong, announcing plans for students to add more saplings to the path to boost its natural appeal.
Sangma encouraged citizens to adopt eco-friendly habits year-round, including recycling, waste reduction, and the use of electric vehicles. He stressed that environmental responsibility must go beyond a single day of celebration, noting that protecting the state's hotspots is essential for both local biodiversity and the tourism sector.
