Meghalaya Closes Historic Mawmluh Cherra Cement Plant

Shillong: Mawmluh Cherra Cement Limited has finally shut its doors. The state’s oldest public sector company once stood as the heartbeat of Sohra’s industry. It started back in the 1960s. For decades, it churned out high-quality cement and supported countless local families.

The plant could not keep up with modern private competitors. Multiple government bailouts failed to fix the mounting losses. Production stopped years ago. The state government finally pulled the plug to prevent further bleeding.

Officials finalized a closure scheme worth Rs 90.5 crore. This golden handshake package paid out in three parts over the last year. Workers received the final installment this June, while suppliers got their outstanding debts cleared. Sohra MLA Gavin Miguel Mylliem said the state tried to save the plant, but "the government explored options like public-private partnerships but found no viable partner."

The chimneys at the plant are cold now. A piece of Meghalaya’s history is gone. The site remains a reminder of the state’s early industrial dreams.
